Lakeshores

The Rural Municipality of Invergordon is home to 6 Lakeshore Communities in addition to numerous hamlets.  Perhaps in part because the RM is ideally located in proximity to Melfort and Prince Albert enabling residents to live at the lake and commute to the city.  At the same time being "off the beaten" path, smaller in size, and offering a quiet peaceful lake experience surrounded by nature and farmland.

Fish Stocking

Saskatchewan Fish Hatchery

The Saskatchewan Fish Hatchery is the only aquaculture facility in Saskatchewan producing and stocking fish into public waters to support angling across the province. Established in 1915 along Echo Lake near Fort Qu’Appelle, the facility has been operating to support Saskatchewan’s recreational fishery for over a century.

The annual fish stocking plans are developed by provincial fisheries biologists from Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Environment. Up to 150 waters across Saskatchewan receive hatchery-produced fish each year.

For updates on the Saskatchewan Fish Hatchery, feel free to like the Hatchery page on Facebook, click here.

For current information on where Hatchery-raised fish have been stocked in the province, the annual Stocked Waters Guides are posted in the Government of Saskatchewan’s online publications, click here

RM of INVERGORDON Stocked Lakes and Historical Stocking*

  • Struthers Lake: stocking of walleye dates back to 1938 and has been on a bi-annual stocking schedule since 2011.  The aeration system in the lake operated by the Regional Park is critical to the ongoing stocking of Struthers Lake.  The Ministry manages this lake for stocked walleye, and native northern pike and yellow perch populations.
    • 2023: Walleye Fry 100,000
    • 2019: Walleye Fry 100,000
    • 2018 (stocking postponed due to aeration issues)
    • 2016: Walleye Fry 100,000
    • 2014: Walleye Fry 500,000
    • 2012: Walleye Fry 500,000

  •  Rhona Lake: stocking of walleye dates back to 1959 and has been on a 3-year stocking schedule, at the discretion of the regional biologists discretion, it will be put on hold if it is determined that sufficient natural reproduction is taking place.  A fisheries population assessment was done in 2016 and found the lake provides a good quality walleye fishing opportunity under the current management regime of stocking to supplement the natural reproduction.  Fry stocked in 2016 were expected to reach catchable size by summer 2019.
    • 2023: Walleye Fry 100,000
    • 2019: Walleye Fry 100,000
    • 2016: Walleye Fry 100,000
    • 2012: Walleye Fry 200,000

  • Jumping Lake: stocking of walleye dates back to 1960, however there was a single stocking event in 1923 of northern pike fingerlings (94) and mullet adults (6).  The lake is on a 2-3 year stocking schedule at the regional biologists discretion and is stocked as the lake habitat is not suitable for walleye spawning.
    • 2022: Walleye Fry 400,000
    • 2017: Walley Fry 500,000
    • 2015: Walley Fry 250,000
    • 2012 no stocking event

2018 limited walleye was available; 2020 & 2021 no Walleye available - as a result 2021 scheduled stockings were bumped to 2022 and 2023

Stocking depends on the final numbers of fry which depends on the success of the spawn collection camps and the number of lakes to be stocked that year.

Dixon Lake is not stocked in the provincial stocking program. The RM Council passed a resolution in February 2019 requesting that the lake be stocked. The Ministry of Environment responded to the RM indicating the lake would not be stocked due to natural environmental limitations.
